Why a fishing day

Where the real conversations happen.

You spend all week flat out on site, on the phone, chasing trades and keeping clients happy. The last thing you need is another stuffy event in a function room.

So we got everyone outdoors. Bring a hat and some sunscreen, put a rod in your hand, and let people be people for a day. That's how you actually get to know someone, and that's what The Good Builder is about: bringing the industry together and backing the good people in it.

The turnout was way bigger than we expected for a first go. Thanks to everyone who rocked up.

On the water

Some crews came to fish.

Creation Homes pulled in some huge catches. The Futurebuild crew, same story. And Metricon proved they're not just Australia's biggest builder: Sam Gribble landed a barra around 80cm, and it still wasn't the biggest of the day.

The honour roll

2026 award winners

Bragging rights, a perpetual shield and a few nail guns up for grabs. Here's who took them home.

Perpetual Shield

Team Casa Ceramica

They fished as a team and it paid off. Their names go on the shield for good.

Biggest Barra

Jordy, J3 Built

Well fished, mate.

Champion Angler

Scott Clague, Stroud Homes

Smallest Fish of the Day 12cm Whiting

Fish Whisperer

John Leonardis, Metricon

A 57cm mangrove jack.

First Catch

Alex, James Marsden Builders

The young apprentice went home with a Paslode Nightwolf nail gun.

Oddest Catch

Linn Batey, Nyblad Constructions

Caught a bird. Earned it.

Total Legend

Steve's young fella, Stroud Homes

The youngest angler on the day, voted by the crowd. About six years old, now owns a nail gun.

Rick Rubin, Senior Estimator at Bold Living, for a very cool barra. Sophie and Alexandra from AUSBUILD, among the first to catch, pulling a massive barramundi off the island while everyone else came up empty. And Ash North and Eleni from Futurebuild Events, who landed the biggest barra of the day while the Biggest Barra award was being handed out.

"You couldn't get the smile off his face, and that was what the whole day was about."

Thank you to our partners

They backed it before anyone knew it'd work.

No track record, no guarantee anyone would show up. These businesses put their hand up for year one, and got a full day mingling with some of Australia's best builders.

We're taking it on tour.

And a big shout out to the food truck for serving up the goods all day.
